Sheeps Head Way Challenge

Date: Thurs, 5th February 2009
Location: Salmon Leap Pub, Leixlip

Tonight we started the wheels turning on the planning of our Sheeps Head Way Challenge ‘09. We appreciate that not everyone was able to make the meeting due to bad weather conditions and therefore hope that you will be able to take a few minutes to read through the following proposal and to give us your feedback.

Sheeps Head Way Challenge: This 88km walk has won an award as being the “Best Walk in Ireland”. Situated on a remote peninsula in West Cork, the trail starts and finishes in Bantry. The route is quite low-lying with the highest point only being around 300m above sea level. There is a mix of road walking and cross country (sometimes through boggy terrain) accompanied by amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean for a majority of the trail.

Dates: We will be starting the walk on Saturday 2nd and finishing on Monday the 4th of May. With a 340km car trip from Dublin to Bantry, we are also advising to factor in an extra day of travel either side of these dates. It should be stressed that this is a bank holiday weekend, so extra-heavy traffic needs to be accounted for when leaving Dublin on the Friday.

Accommodation: Unlike last year when we walked the Wicklow Way and stayed in several locations along the trail, this year we will be staying in the one place for the four nights. Initial contact has been made with several B&B’s in Bantry and we are keen to block book places as there are already other holiday-makers booking for this weekend.

We have currently been quoted an excellent special-offer price for a group of twenty of €100 per person for the four nights. We obviously would like to secure this booking as soon as we can and so would like to confirm numbers of those who intend doing the walk.

Food: Breakfast will be included in the price of the accommodation. The only other costing that we have so far is €15 for 3 packed lunches. We will be looking into prices for dinners out soon.

Travel: Through a large-scale collaboration of car-pooling, it is our intention to organise the travel for each day of the walk to be done by the group. It’s estimated that the start or end of any day’s walk will only be around a 30 minute drive from our base in Bantry.

Fund-Raising: Our main emphasis this year is to generate publicity for Melanoma Awareness. Whilst any fund-raising taken on by participants is welcome, it is not compulsory.

A Call for Action!: We would like to hear from you immediately if you intend on joining this walk. Please notify Peter when you can or leave your name in the comment field below.

We will be having another meeting on Thursday the 19th of February in the Salmon Leap where Peter will collect a deposit of €50 for the event.
