Glendalough Hike
Date: 18th January 2009
Starting Point: Glendalough Lower Car Park
Start Time: 11:00
End Time: 15:00

Description: In our build-up to the Sheeps Head Way Challenge, we started off with a nice relaxed start in Anne’s Cafe. Tea and toast and some time to catch up on worldy events.
We started out on the walk from the Lower Car Park at Glendalough, by the Visitor’s Centre. With everyone feeling a little more energetic than what the planned walk had dictated, we opted to do the route in reverse - starting with going up the million and one steps past Poulanass Waterfall and on to the Spinc.
After taking five minutes to get our breath back, under the guise of stopping for a photo break, we pushed on along the railway sleeper section which was a lot easier going. We stopped for lunch close to the bridge going over the Glenealo River and took out the stove. What a disaster - Eoin forgot the matches, Tommy spills his soup and the meths gives out half-way through reheating the sausages! Well at least the journey back to the car went ok!
Conditions: It started out as a beautiful sunny morning. Up on the higher slopes there was snow and ice on some parts of the railway sleepers. As the clouds rolled in during our lunch break, the snow started to come down. This then turned back to rain after descending into the valley.
Roll Call: Eoin, Peter and Tommy.
Distance: 10km | Ascent: 400m
