Mole mapping clinic launched at CUH

A new clinic to improve the detection of cancerous moles has been established at Cork University Hospital (CUH) as part of the hospital’s melanoma service in a development which is the first of its kind in any hospital in Cork city.

The mole mapping clinic at CUH is being provided by clinical nurse specialist Katrina Fogarty who underwent specialist training at the University of Graz in Austria to operate the service and she explained how it was integrated into the hospital’s melanoma service.

Ban on use of sunbeds for children moves closer

A ban on the use of sunbeds by under 18-year-olds has moved a step closer with the Department of Health planning to meet interested parties in the coming weeks before it finalises legislation providing for the ban.

In recent months the department received 18 submissions in a public consultation on proposed legislation to regulate the use of the artificial tanning machines. The majority of submissions sought a ban on the use of sunbeds by under 18-year-olds.

Dyeing for melanoma

With its high rate of melanoma, Australia is deeply involved in research into a possible cure, and a new treatment involving a dye called Rose Bengal has seen interesting results, writes Pádraig Collins, in Sydney.

Australia has the world’s highest rate of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, with nearly 10,000 new cases diagnosed each year, so it is not surprising that Australian doctors are leading the world in melanoma research.

Check-up: Fair-skinned people are particularly prone to the effects of the sun, writes Marion Kerr

I made the mistake of pointing out a couple of dry, rough spots on my forehead to my wife. Now she’s pressurising me to go to our GP as she thinks I might have cancer. I think she’s over reacting. What do you think?
